The Osagunrin of Igunrin, Ilawe Ekiti, Chief Sanya Atofarati, is set to embark on a unique quest to establish a new Guinness World Record for the ‘longest marathon watching television.’ Commencing on Wednesday, December 27, he aims to surpass the current record of 94 hours set in 2016.
In a statement titled ‘Why I am attempting GWR, Atofarati,’ Chief Atofarati outlined his intentions, expressing his commitment to initiate the challenge at 1 am on December 27, 2023, and conclude it at 1 am on January 1, 2024, in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.
Atofarati emphasized that the exercise would involve continuous television watching at home, refraining from work, community engagement, and social activities during the festive season, promoting family bonding.
The Ekiti chief clarified that the challenge is not for fundraising purposes, and neither he nor his team would solicit monetary donations. He assured that medical aids would be present to ensure his well-being, and the entire challenge would be live-streamed with hashtags #ChiefSanya and #GWRchiefsanya for real-time public assessment.
Atofarati’s team plans to utilize this opportunity to support aspiring artists, offering free recording sessions for 50 artists and inviting volunteer DJs to join the endurance journey.
Stating his motivation, Atofarati highlighted that being recognized as a Guinness World Record holder is a result of hard work and determination.
He aims to leverage this platform to raise awareness for information gathering and dissemination in Africa, promoting the diverse talents of the black community globally.
In addition, Atofarati intends to showcase his hometown, Ilawe-Ekiti, as a significant producer of bananas and emphasize his multifaceted identity as a farmer, sculptor, impressionist, and songwriter.
Through this challenge, he hopes to encourage and inspire younger generations while contributing to the global dialogue on the quality of black craftsmanship.
