In a bid to combat the rising menace of “one chance” operators in Abuja, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nysom Wike, has revealed that the FCT Administration is set to introduce a fleet of new buses and taxis for public transportation.
The announcement came during a high-level meeting with estate developers in Abuja on Tuesday.
Wike assured FCT residents that the new buses and taxis would be deployed on the roads in the next month, providing a viable solution to the longstanding issue of criminal activities perpetrated by “one chance” operators. He emphasized that once these new vehicles are in operation, the problem would be a thing of the past for the capital city.
However, Wike also issued a stern warning, stating that those who choose to opt for non-governmental taxis or buses would do so at their own risk. The designated buses and taxis are expected to ply major routes in Maitama, Asokoro, and various parts of the city, contributing to enhanced safety and security.
In an effort to further bolster security measures, the FCTA plans to oust commercial tricycle operators from Abuja, citing concerns that some of them may be working as agents for criminals. Wike acknowledged the struggles of these operators but emphasized the greater need to protect the genuine businesses and safety of the city’s residents.
“We could not take action without providing an alternative. Now that we have the alternative, we are not afraid to take that action,” Wike explained, highlighting the importance of having viable public transportation alternatives before implementing such decisions.
The move comes as a response to the escalating incidents of “one chance” crimes, with residents, especially civil servants and journalists, falling victim to criminal acts perpetrated by disguised commercial drivers and commuters. The introduction of the new buses and taxis is expected to not only address the security concerns but also provide a reliable and secure public transportation option for the people of Abuja.
