Dr. Aminu Maida, the newly appointed Executive Vice Chairman of the NigerianCommunications Commission (NCC), assumed office on Tuesday, pledging a commitment to making affordable and reliable broadband internet services accessible to all Nigerians.
In alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, Maida emphasized his dedication to advancing the country’s digital transformation efforts.
Under Maida’s leadership, the NCC aims to facilitate effective broadband infrastructure deployment nationwide. Recognizing the growing digitalization trend, he stressed the need for robust broadband connectivity to support digital transactions, e-governance, and various socio-economic initiatives.
To achieve this, the NCC plans to increase broadband penetration to 70% and cover 90% of the population by 2025.
Maida underscored the importance of quality of service (QoS) indicators and quality of experience (QoE) as central goals. He highlighted challenges such as Right of Way (RoW) issues and the security of telecom infrastructure that need addressing to improve service delivery.
Additionally, he emphasized the necessity to align NCC’s activities with the Strategic Plan of the Minister of Communications, Innovations, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, including equipping three million Nigerians with digital skills and entrepreneurship capabilities.
Regarding his approach, Maida stated, “We would not entertain anything that deviates from this direction because my key performance indicators (KPIs) are fed into the Minister’s KPIs and the President’s KPIs come from the electorate that put him into power.”
Maida’s appointment follows a recent restructuring within the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, as part of President Tinubu’s vision for job creation and enabling the digital economy.
