Police Detain Officer Over Killing, Protests Erupt in Kano

Date:

The Kano State Police Command has taken a law enforcement officer into custody following the alleged killing of a resident, Salisu Player, leading to protests in Kurnar Asabe, Fagge Local Government Area of the Kano metropolis.

The incident transpired when the police responded to a confrontation between two rival street groups (Yan Daba). Witnesses reported that upon the police’s arrival to quell the fight, shots were fired to disperse the crowd, resulting in the tragic death of Salisu Player.

The initial conflict reportedly arose from a disagreement over a young woman, with the fight extending from Monday into late Tuesday.

Kano State Police spokesperson, Haruna Kiyawa, stated that the Commissioner of Police, Muhammed Gumel, has initiated a Board of Inquiry. The Dala Area Commander has been directed to lead the preliminary investigation into the incident. Kiyawa assured the public that justice would be served in the matter.

In an official statement, Kiyawa expressed regret over the unfortunate incident, noting that the Police Command, under CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel’s leadership, had not engaged in confrontations or fired gunshots since assuming office. The arrest of the involved Police Inspector aims to address the situation promptly.

The statement emphasized the commitment of the Police Command to respecting the rights and freedoms of all individuals. The unusual nature of the incident is highlighted, given the typically cordial relationship between the police and the public in the state. The Police Command called for public assurance that justice would prevail in handling the matter.
