Seven students from the Federal University of Lafia (FULAFIA) in Nasarawa State, who were abducted four days ago, have been released, bringing relief to their families and the university community.
The students, three females and four males, were freed on Sunday evening through collaborative efforts by the military and other security forces.
Ibrahim Ogabo, the President of the Student Representative Council, confirmed the students’ release in a phone conversation with Channels Television. As of the latest update, the students were receiving medical attention at the school’s clinic.
The abduction occurred on Wednesday night when the students were taken from their off-campus accommodation in Gandu village, prompting immediate protests from their fellow students. The demonstrators demanded the release of their peers and called for improved security measures in the area.
Gandu village, known as a student hub closely connected to the university premises, has been a hotspot for criminal activities, including kidnappings and robberies. The community accommodates over 6,000 students, particularly those in the 300 to 500 levels, as the university does not provide housing for them. The release of the abducted students brings a sigh of relief and underscores the ongoing challenges facing student safety in certain areas surrounding the university.
