University of Calabar Implements Over 100% Tuition Fee Increase for 2022–2024 Academic Sessions

Date:

The University of Calabar (UNICAL) management has officially declared a tuition fee hike for undergraduate students, exceeding 100 percent.

The announcement was conveyed through a press release shared with journalists in Calabar on Monday by the university’s spokesperson, Mr. Effiong Eyo. The decision to increase the fees was reached during an emergency meeting of the university’s Senate held last Friday.

According to the statement, the revised fees will be implemented during the academic sessions of 2022–2023 and 2023–2024. Under the new fee structure, students in non-science courses, including freshmen, returning students, and final-year students, are now required to pay N111,000, N91,500, and N114,000, respectively. Additionally, they must contribute N36,500, N21,500, and N21,500, respectively, as third-party dues.

In the case of science courses, the fees have been raised to N155,000, N125,000, and N148,000 for freshmen, returning students, and final-year students, along with third-party dues of N38,500, N21,500, and N21,500, respectively.

Prior to this adjustment, tuition fees for an average student, depending on the department, were N64,050 for freshmen, N52,050 for final year students, and N49,500 for returning students. The university’s management justified the increase by citing current economic challenges and the necessity to uphold the academic standards for which the institution is renowned.
