The All Progressives Congress (APC) has submitted a complaint to the disciplinary committee of the Nigerian Bar Association, alleging ‘deprecating remarks’ against Supreme Court justices made by the National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, and the party’s campaign council spokesman, Kenneth Okonkwo.
The APC claims that these comments breach the duo’s responsibilities as legal practitioners and bring the judiciary into disrepute. Senator Ajibola Basiru, the National Secretary of APC, emphasized that such actions cannot be tolerated as they challenge the sanctity of the legal system.
In response, the Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, stated that the complaint vindicated their earlier warnings about the APC’s intention to target their leaders, especially after the Supreme Court’s judgment on the Presidential Election.
Ifoh asserted that the remarks made by Abure and Okonkwo were political statements, not professional opinions, and were delivered in their capacities as party representatives.
He warned against the alleged dictatorial path taken by the administration, urging democratic forces to protect public opinion and human rights in Nigeria. Ifoh also called on the Nigerian Bar Association to remain impartial and not succumb to political pressures.
