In a compelling address at the 64th ordinary session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu urged West African leaders to prioritize good governance and collective prosperity.
Tinubu emphasized that good governance is not only a fundamental commitment but also a powerful tool to secure popular support, address citizens’ concerns, and create a stable environment for sustainable development.
The President underscored the importance of tackling challenges like poverty and inequality, asserting that through good governance, the root causes of military interventions in civilian processes could be effectively addressed.
Tinubu applauded the decisions taken by West African leaders to strengthen democratic achievements and outlined specific measures against any member state attempting an unconstitutional change of government.
While acknowledging the challenges of imposing sanctions, Tinubu highlighted the imperative of engaging with countries under military rule based on realistic and short transition plans, with a commitment to providing technical and material support for the restoration of democracy.
He also commended Liberia’s President George Weah for conceding victory in the last presidential election, setting an exemplary precedent for democratic ideals.
Addressing recent disturbances in Sierra Leone and Guinea Bissau, the ECOWAS Chairman called on fellow leaders to stand strong and be highly committed to protecting democracy, reiterating ECOWAS’ zero tolerance for unconstitutional government changes.
Tinubu expressed solidarity with the re-elected president of Sierra Leone and emphasized the unwavering commitment to fighting for democracy in the face of challenges.
