Concerned women from the South-East region of Nigeria have voiced their distress over the escalating insecurity in Igboland and have called for decisive measures to enhance the socio-economic growth of the area.
The women expressed their worries during a gathering titled ‘Nkata Ndi Iyom Igbo’ held in Enugu. The event was organized to facilitate collaboration between women, men, and youth to combat the prevalent insecurity, particularly in the South-East.
Josephine Anenih, a former Minister of Women Affairs and the convener of the gathering, emphasized the dire situation in Igboland. She highlighted the daily experiences of tears, sorrow, and bloodshed, pointing out that women were disproportionately affected by the insecurity crisis. Anenih noted the exodus of young people from the region due to unemployment, while potential investors were hesitant to engage in the area because of security concerns.
Anenih stressed the urgent need for collective action, emphasizing the importance of introspection to identify the factors contributing to the challenges faced by the South-East. She called for unity and collaboration to rectify the issues, especially considering the political, economic, and socio-cultural crossroads faced by Nigeria.
Regina Amadi-Njoku, the Chair of the group’s board of trustees, highlighted the imperative need for security, justice, and peace for societal development. She underscored the pivotal role of women, who, as daughters, wives, and mothers, are instrumental in both the informal and formal sectors. Amadi-Njoku emphasized that women possess unique abilities to foster peace and resolution, making them indispensable contributors to social harmony.
Governor Peter Mbah, endorsing the meeting, advocated for the active inclusion of women in social development, peace-building, and nation-building initiatives across the country. The gathering served as a platform for women to unite their voices, share ideas, and contribute meaningfully to resolving the pressing issues affecting the South-East, ultimately fostering a safer and more prosperous future for the region.
