There is jubilation in Rivers State following the announcement of the Local government elections held today.
The Action Peoples Party (APP) achieved a historic victory, winning 22 out of 23 chairmanship positions This marks a significant shift in local governance, as opposition parties have not held such control since 1999.
Said a source,
” Government House Port Harcourt is the biggest party venue tonight. Gov Sim Fubara and his team are jubilant.”
The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) confirmed these results amidst tensions, including protests from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against the election’s legitimacy. Governor Siminalayi Fubara acknowledged the challenges posed by the absence of PDP candidates, emphasizing the importance of compliance with a Supreme Court ruling mandating local elections.
What were the main reasons behind the APP’s landslide victory in Rivers State
The Action Peoples Party (APP) secured a landslide victory in the recent Rivers State local government elections due to several key factors:
1. **Absence of PDP Candidates**: The ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) did not participate, creating a significant opportunity for opposition parties to gain control for the first time since 1999.
2. **Supreme Court Ruling**: A Supreme Court mandate required local elections, compelling compliance from the state government and enhancing the legitimacy of the electoral process.
3. **Political Dynamics**: Ongoing tensions between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and former Governor Nyesom Wike influenced voter sentiment, with many seeking alternatives to the established political order.
For many political watchers, this signals the demolition of the strangulating political structure and stronghold of Nyesom Wike on the politics in Rivers State.
