Nigeria: Dano Products Targeted in Rising Epidemic of Fakery, Jeopardizing Consumer Safety and Brand Reputation

Nigeria is fast becoming a country of fakery, as evident from the widespread presence of counterfeit products in the market. From fake Coca cola, Pepsi, Malt drinks, Guinness stout, to Star lager, it seems no brand is safe from being replicated. In addition, even renowned liquor brands such as Hennessy and champagne have fallen victim to counterfeiters, with authorities busting fake wine and liquor factories.
The prevalence of counterfeit products in Nigeria has become a cause for concern among consumers. The fear of unknowingly purchasing fake goods has made it increasingly worrisome to buy products in the open market. This issue not only harms consumers who may unknowingly consume unsafe or substandard products, but it also has broader implications for the reputation of genuine brands.
In light of the rampant production and distribution of counterfeit goods, it is imperative that regulatory agencies up their game. The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has taken steps to address the issue of counterfeit milk powder. In a statement issued by Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of NAFDAC, it was revealed that Arla Dano 14g sachet full cream milk powder has been counterfeited and is being openly displayed in many markets.
The counterfeit Arla Dano milk powder can be identified by batch numbers 7A08016:01 and 8A0306:36, with expiry dates of May 2024 and February 2024 respectively. NAFDAC has directed its zonal directors and state coordinators to conduct surveillance and remove the counterfeit milk powder from the market.
In response to this alarming situation, it is crucial for distributors, retailers, and consumers to exercise caution and vigilance. They should carefully check the authenticity and physical condition of products before consuming, selling, or distributing them. By being vigilant, they can help avoid the consumption of counterfeit products, protect their own health, and contribute to the eradication of the fake product market.
Furthermore, it is high time that business owners and entrepreneurs invested in proper production processes instead of resorting to counterfeiting. Faking other people’s products not only infringes on intellectual property rights, but it also harms their reputation and undermines trust in their brand.
