In a telling travel advisory, the Government of Canada has categorized Nigeria as a dangerous place to visit, urging its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to the country. The advisory highlights the multitude of security risks, including terrorism, crime, inter-communal clashes, armed attacks, and kidnappings. This dire situation underscores the urgent need for Nigeria’s government to take immediate action in order to properly secure the lives of its citizens and visitors by implementing a comprehensive overhaul of the country’s security architecture.
The Canadian government’s travel advisory not only identifies numerous regions in Nigeria to avoid completely due to elevated risks, such as the northwestern states of Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, and Zamfara, and the north-central states of Plateau and Kogi, but it also issues a regional risk level of “Avoid all travel” to these areas. The advisory further emphasizes the dangerous security conditions present in the north-eastern states of Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, and Yobe, as well as the Niger Delta states of Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta, Imo, and Rivers (excluding Port Harcourt).
